Toast Chef Dave Roland says he tries to “chase passion.” Which has worked out quite nicely for his restaurant, Toast, downtown.
Roland said the minute he walked into the building that is now his restaurant, he was in love. “I knew it was the one. I just felt so comfortable and at peace and at home; it was really strange,” he said.
We are grateful that Dave took some time recently to tell us more about his life and love of our community.
Question: What led you to your current career?
Answer: “My mom raised me as a single parent and she had to work a lot. I really wanted to cook but she didn’t want me to cook when I was a kid at home alone. She was afraid I would burn the house down, I guess. They only thing she let me do was to use the microwave and the toaster. I got great at making the perfect toast.”
Q: Do you change the menu with the seasons at Toast?
A: “We change the menu seasonally and we try to use as many local people as possible. Having the farmer’s market downtown in the summer is great…and we try to bring that into the restaurant.
Q: What is your favorite dish in your restaurant?
A: “I like everything but I my steaks are simple and amazing.”
Q: What is it that you love about our community?
A: “We are excited to be part of the change. When we came here ten years ago, it was pretty quiet and now the little town is bustling and we are excited to be a part of that. It’s really cool to see the vendors that have come in and join us on Main St. I also am in love with the people here, and the proximity to everything you could ever want within 1 hour from my home and business.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in the next five to 10 years?
A: “I just want to keep building good quality restaurants, I think I’ll settle down a little bit though but then still opening one or two more. We are hoping to expand Toast…we’d like to open up for lunch one day if the city would support it.”
Q: What are three words that mean “HOME” to you?
A: “Warmth, Food, Energy.”
