MELANIE TAYLOR

Meet Melanie Taylor.

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?

A: Actually me and my sister, both of us we’re going to be Veterinarians. And a bad haircut made me start doing hair literally. I had nobody in my family does hair. I didn’t grow up knowing hairstyles, you know like your grandmother braid your hair and stuff like that. But most hairstylists that I meet are generational. I’m the only person in my family that does hair.  So it came from a bad haircut. Unique Vision Salon

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Augusta and what do you love there?

A: I am a bread eater, so any place that has good bread, I eat there. I can’t really say I have a favorite spot here but I like Frog Hollow downtown, it is a nice kind of southern restaurant. I love Logan’s because of their bread.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Augusta?

A: I guess I have lived here for 32 years and I have worked as a stylist in Augusta for 15 years.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Augusta?

A: I’ve had to do radio stuff so I got a chance to meet Cher Best. She was really awesome and having interviewed artists and different stuff like that there.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?

A: The only place I haven’t been to Australia. I just want to see the big Crocodile Dundee and it is classy than most other places. I want to go to Egypt too.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies?

A: The original Friday.

Q: What is the first movie you remember seeing in the theatre?

A: I remember seeing Rush Hour.

Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A: I would say get educated, continue to get educated in whatever field you’re trying to get into. Especially entrepreneur wise, I’m very big on mentorship and learning from people that have walked down that road.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A: I want to open another facility in another state or city.

Q: What is your go favorite music?

A: I’m a bit Gospel, but I love rap and hip hop.

Q: What are the three bands you would like to see? Dead or alive?

A: I love the Five Heartbeats, I could have seen them. I wish I could have seen Michael Jackson and I want to see Tamela Mann.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Augusta?

A: The Master’s has been here forever, so that’s what they’re known as and everything to me is centralized around a master’s.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

A: Michelle and Barack Obama. I understand they were the president and all that but I love their love.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about Evans?

A: Crazy thing is I mainly work here.  I’ll go out of town. But if I am here, I go to the movies, I’ll go to the movies and I go get bread from Logan’s.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A: 5 years prayerfully married. 10 years I’ll have this building paid off.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A: I’m very quiet, I’m an introvert and I am petrified of public speaking and getting in front of audiences, even though I do hair shows and stuff like that.

Q: Can you describe the neighborhood you grew up in?

A: It was Salem West, it was the south Augusta. As I said, Fort Gordon was very prevalent on that side of town and I remember I used to beg my parents to move to the Pepper because it is just like the big neighborhood. South Augusta was like black excellence. So the thing I hate most of all where I grew up is how they’ve transformed it and try to downgrade it. But I love Saint Louis, the neighbors is all bunch of kids. Like we went outside and played, our neighbors were like it was truly a village’s village. Like everybody knew everybody.

Q: If you were cast in a movie and could choose your co-star, who would it be?

A: Shemar Moore. I love him.

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A: Food, Laughing jokes and jiving and Animals like pets.

Q: If you had a full-time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose?

Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer, or Nanny?

A: A Driver because I hate traveling and I have a lot of back and forth and commuting.  Whenever I say, whenever I make real money, I’m going to hire a driver.

Q: If you could hold onto one memory from your life forever, what would that be?

A: Having my daughter.

Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

A: My Mr. Woods, he’s the owner of the company that I work for SJ products. I grew up with military or grandparents, teachers, nurses, you know the traditional, you go to school, you get a job and you’re in that. So this doing hair and on a business is out of our ordinary. So it took a long time for my family to get used to me saying I’m doing hair. Mr. Woods just pushes me in another way and pushed me so many times.

Q: If you could share one piece of advice, what would it be?

A: Faith in God and you have to keep your faith because a lot of stuff you’re not going to see. And you have to understand that what he’s speaking to you and what you see in your dreams is the vision as He is giving you. So just don’t be afraid to go and get it. You have to, He’s not just going give it to you. You have to go to work and get it.
