INTRODUCING MISS. KARIS PORTER

Questions:

Q: What High School do you attend?

A: South Aiken High School.

Q.  Please tell us about your current plans after high school and what inspired you to choose this path?

A.  My major is psychology. My future plan is to become a forensic psychologist and/or a clinical psychologist. The reason why I want to become a psychologist is because I am absolutely fascinated with the human mind. Within my career I will diagnose and treat individuals experiencing psychological distress and mental illness. Out of all my friends I’ve always been the “counselor”. I’m a very understanding person to approach which is why I’ve decided to go down that path with my career. I’ve always been a heavyset girl. 2 years ago I weighed over 235. I’ve been bullied for the majority of my years in elementary and middle school. It sort of died down in high school but I would get a few fat comments from time to time. After losing the weight, I was still left with those same insecurities. Over the months I’ve learned to love myself more and more each day. I’ve overcome those insecurities. Going through that situation has really opened my eyes to see how powerful the mind truly is. I realized that I was in a battle with my own mind. This career is most definitely fit for me because I’ve overcome many obstacles and my goal is to fuel others to overcome their own. I have a strong desire for it, and it’s always been my passion. I will first attend Aiken Tech for 2 yrs then a University for 4 years.

Q.  Please tell us a little bit about your family.

A.  I live with my mom and dad Mary Porter & Kenneth Porter. I don’t come from a very wealthy family but my parents have always found a way to make ends meet.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?

A: Steak ‘n Shake.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

A: My manager, Mary Ann. She’s looked out for me as if she wasn’t my boss.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

A: Dubai, Barbados, & Paris because I am a person that enjoys nature and the beauty of it. These places have beautiful attractions & I would love to go just for the view.

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and the best single day on the calendar?

A: My favorite month is December and my favorite holiday is Christmas because of how the whole month of December is filled with merry vibes due to Christmas. My favorite single day is my birthday because it just reminds me of how lucky I am to be here for another year.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

A: My mom inspires me to be better but also I inspire myself to be better because I would like to achieve the goals I set for myself.

Q: If you could go back over your entire school career, what is one thing you would do differently?

A: I would be in more extra-curricular activities because I didn’t really take it to my full capacity. I know I was capable of doing more than I actually did.

Q: Who or what do you miss the most right now?

A: I really miss my family and friends from school.

Q: What life lessons have you learned through this quarantine experience?

A: I’ve learned that we take our everyday life for granted. I used to complain about going to school every day but it was extremely sad being at school and not knowing it was our last day without getting to say goodbye to our friends. We didn’t realize that would be our last time walking out of that school as students. We don’t really realize how important our lifestyle is to us until it’s taken away.

Q: What’s the first thing you want to do when this quarantine is over?

A: Spend time with my family.
