HENRY BISHOP

Meet, Henry Bishop. He is a Area Development Manager for Colonial Life. Henry has lived in our community for 40 years. In meeting with Henry we decided to have a quick early morning chat at Starbucks and as I waited for Henry to arrive. . .I decided to try one of those refresher drinks. After a minute or two, Henry arrived with a great inviting smile and a spirit-led energy. Once he grabbed his coffee order, we sat comfortably into experiencing a great conversation.  Having been born and raised in Augusta; Henry was a great wealth of knowledge; I learned things that were knew to me about the CSRA and especially, his love for golf.

One of the questions we asked Henry was, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?  He responded:  I have played the Augusta National Golf Course on several occasions and the infamous, an ultra-private Cypress Point Golf Course in California along the jagged coastline of the Monterey Peninsula, which is ranked No. 3 on Golf Digest’s latest ranking of America’s 100 Greatest. Behind perhaps only Augusta National, and a few others, it’s the hardest entry to secure–many will never have the opportunity to play this exclusive course. So, I consider myself blessed to have played there. You know Henry. . .we think this is really neat and a spectacular accomplishment. We could really see and feel the passion you have for golfing and when talking about your beautiful wife and family.

QUESTIONS:

Q. What inspired you or led you to your current career?

A. One of the pastors at our church; his son referred me since he was aware of my career background and so, that is what kinda led me to research more about my current employer.  In addition, Colonial Life was seeking individuals with local knowledge of the Augusta market and who had a great network.

Q. What is your favorite restaurant in Augusta, and what do you love there?

A. Wow. There are so many great restaurants to choose from.  Frog Hollow Tavern on Broad Street.  The Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery is a great little spot in-town to have dessert; I just have to mention it.

Q. How long have you lived or worked in Augusta?

A. Forty Years

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?

A.  Ireland. My wife and I really want to travel there; she is of Irish decent.

Q. What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theatre?

A.  Wedding Crashers.  Anger Management is another honorable mention. They both were funny.

Q. What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A.  I would say,  get to know everyone around you as best as you can.   Perfect example: just like this project here, I mean you’re meeting all kinds of different people from different backgrounds and everyone has something to contribute. Just getting to know your neighbor.

Q. What is something on your bucket list?

 A.  To Play St. Andrews, the golf course in Scotland and that would go along with the Ireland trip.  St. Andrew’s is definitely a bucket list of a course. “Beautiful”.  It is the home of golf.  You know, being in Augusta, we love golf here, so I would love to play it.   Meanwhile, I actually met my beautiful wife at the Augusta National.  It’s a real cool story. During the masters, we worked there in high school; we went to two different high schools in two different parts of town. We met at the master’s while working in the golf shop where they sell merchandise.  We often return to where we met;  it’s a very special place for us. We also took our engagement pictures out there too, we got married on May 2nd.

Q. What is your favorite music/ 3 bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?

A.  No real favorite genre of music. Yet, I do enjoy: Dave Matthews Band, Elvis and James Brown.  I would love to see them in-person. Actually, my uncle is an Elvis impersonator.

Q. What current / former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Augusta?

A.  Shoney’s  that used to be on Gordon Highway; a very family oriented restaurant that no longer exist.

Q. Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? Where in Augusta would you have lunch?

A.  The Great Golfer Jack Nickalus would be the person I would want to have lunch with. Just to have the opportunity to listen to his stories and I would most likely say the same if Palmer was still around. I have admired them both for years; being a golfer myself. But, Jack with all of his outstanding records and accomplishments; although, Tiger is as a very dominant player in the world.  But, Jack. . . is still the number one golfer forever.  Without any doubt, Tiger is always going to be the most dominant golfer that’s every played; but, until he surpasses Jack’s record–you cannot call him number one.  Having lunch with Jack would be cool; I’ve personally seen him in the Augusta National Clubhouse having lunch on several occasions.  Since, we are in Augusta, it would be most appropriate to have lunch served at the Augusta National. I would request a nice little setup in the clubhouse and just sit and listen to him tell his stories. . .

Q. What is your favorite thing or something unique about Augusta?

A. Augusta is the Biggest Small-Town in America

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A. Owning my own insurance agency. I want to be an entrepreneur.

Q. (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A.  I have played the Augusta National Golf Course on several occasions and the infamous, an ultra-private Cypress Point Golf Course in California along the jagged coastline of Monterey Peninsula, which is ranked No. 3 on Golf Digest’s latest ranking of America’s 100 Greatest. Behind perhaps only Augusta National, and a few others, it’s the hardest entry to secure. So, I consider myself blessed to have played there.

Q. Can you describe the neighborhood you grew up in?

A. A simple family oriented neighborhood on the Southside of Augusta.

Q. What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A. 1) Comfort, 2) Security and 3) Family

Q. If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?

A. Steve Carell

Q. If you had a full-time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose?  {Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer, or Nanny} WHY?

A. A Nanny for the kids.

Q. If you could hold on to one memory from your life forever, what would that be?

A. The moments I am now creating with my family; with the children being so young. I know that they won’t always be this age; I cherish these moments with my family. They just won’t last forever.

Q. Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

A. Really my father-in-law is first one that comes to mind. He is probably the most godly man you’ll ever meet and just talking to him you sense it.  I have been married for 11 years; so, I ‘ve been around him since I was in high school–let’s say 12 years or so; not even half my life, but he’s just one of those guys that is very wise and you experience it in the knowledge in which he shares. He inspires me to be greater; he helps me from a faith perspective.  I guess, more than anything else; I see him and I want to be more like him.

OUR FINAL QUESTION

Q. IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A. TRUST YOUR GUT.
